Things to Know Before Visiting Cradle Mountain
Essential tips to help you plan the perfect Cradle Mountain trip

Cradle Mountain is one of those places that stays with you – from the moss-covered forests to the glassy alpine lakes and those first views of the mountain itself!
But it definitely helps to be prepared even if you're visiting in the peak of winter or during the summer crowds. So, here are a few things worth knowing before you go.
1. You’ll need a Parks Pass and shuttle access
To access the main walking areas (like Dove Lake), you’ll need a valid Parks Pass. As of July 2025, it can't be purchased online so your option is to purchase directly at the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre. Private vehicles aren’t allowed to drive into Dove Lake between shuttle hours, so you’ll need to catch the Parks shuttle from the visitor centre – double-check the schedule, as it changes seasonally.
2. Parking is limited
Even outside shuttle hours, the Dove Lake car park has very limited spaces. If you're hoping to drive in, aim to arrive well before sunrise. Ronny Creek has a few more spots and is another good starting point for hikes like the Crater Lake Circuit or Overland Track.
3. The weather changes fast
Layering is essential – even in summer. It’s not unusual to go from blue skies to snow flurries in a matter of hours. Pack a rain jacket, gloves, and warm layers, especially if you’re planning to hike up to Marion’s Lookout or further into alpine terrain. I found myself removing layers and putting them back on multiple times during a hike.
4. Sunrises are special (and less crowded)
Cradle Mountain is stunning any time of day, but there’s something about sunrise that’s extra magical – golden light hitting the mountain, and barely anyone around. It’s worth the early wake-up, especially at spots like Dove Lake Boatshed or Ronny Creek. Highly recommended doing a sunrise mission!
5. Food and supplies are limited
Once you’re in the area, dining options are minimal and mostly attached to accommodation. Stock up on groceries or snacks in Sheffield or Launceston before arriving – we found it helpful to have a stash of snacks ready for hike days. Plus, dining can get very $$$ as there is limited options.
6. Book experiences ahead of time
Things like the Waldheim Alpine Spa and Devils @ Cradle night tours can book out, especially in winter. We left the spa too late and missed out, so if it’s on your list, book it early!
7. You don’t need to do huge hikes to enjoy it
One of the best things about Cradle is that even the short walks are incredible. Trails like the Enchanted Walk and Pencil Pine Falls are quick and easy but packed with beauty. You’ll find mossy forests, waterfalls, and wildlife without needing to go far.
Cradle Mountain really is one of those places that makes you slow down and take it all in. A little planning goes a long way out here, but once you're in, everything feels easy and peaceful.
I hope these tips help you get the most out of your time – and that you leave feeling just as obsessed with this part of Tassie as I did!
