Lofoten’s weather shifts dramatically throughout the year, so your packing needs to follow suit. While the layering system stays the same, here’s how you should adjust based on the season:

November to March is Cold, Dark, and Icy: This is the coldest and darkest time of year in Lofoten and also the most magical if you’re here to see the Northern Lights. Expect snow, ice, strong winds, and long nights. During this period, staying warm and dry is your top priority, especially if you’ll be outside for long hours chasing the aurora. Packing properly isn’t optional it’s what makes the difference between enjoying the Arctic and suffering through it.

  • Prioritize warmth and waterproofing.

  • Pack extra wool layers, thicker socks, and heavier insulated boots.

  • Add ice grips/crampons for walking on icy roads or trails. ( you can get them at the supermarket )

  • Bring a headlamp, you’ll need it to walk in the dark of the polar nights.

  • Aurora hunters: hand warmers, thermos, and backup power banks are essential! ( batteries will run out faster in the cold, so always bring extra bateries and a power bank )

April: Melting Snow and Brighter Days: In april you have lower possibilities to se the aurora borealis but it can happen! especially during the first week.

  • Keep your base layers and waterproofs, but you might not need the thickest coat.

  • Lighter gloves and a thinner hat may be enough for daytime.

  • Sunglasses can be a must on brigther days. I personally don't use sunglasses but many people can be sensitive to the light. The snow glare is strong as the sun returns.

  • Still bring or purchase crampons as there can be icy patches.

September to October: Crisp Air and Aurora Returns

Autumn in Lofoten brings cooler temperatures, shorter days, and the return of the Northern Lights. The weather can change quickly from sunny hikes to sudden rain or wind so it’s all about flexible layers and waterproof gear. While it’s not as cold as winter yet, the nights can get chilly, especially when you’re standing still waiting for the aurora. This is the perfect time to balance warmth and mobility in your packing.

  • Time to layer up again nights get colder and wind picks up.

  • Bring full thermal layers, insulated boots, and waterproof outerwear.

  • Great month for hiking + aurora spotting, so pack both warmth and comfort gear.
