Tucked away near Campbell River, this trail is a local secret that leads you to not one, but two stunning waterfalls. Your adventure begins on an easy, though often rocky and root-covered, path that follows the creek—you'll reach the first cascade, Trout Creek Falls, in about ten minutes. For a real treat, continue on the more challenging trail as it narrows and climbs to the even more impressive Mohun Creek Falls. It’s best to visit during the rainy season from fall through spring to see the falls in their full, gushing glory, and be sure to wear sturdy shoes for the slippery sections.

A moderate hiking destination located approximately 14–20 km northwest of Campbell River on Vancouver Island. The trail features a series of three to four waterfalls, with the final falls often considered the most spectacular.

Mohun Creek Trail

  • Distance & Time: The round-trip hike is approximately 4 km to 5 km. It typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete the return journey.

  • Difficulty: Rated as Moderate. The trail is narrow, can be muddy or slippery, and includes sections with exposed roots and rocks.

  • Technical Features: Some steep sections are equipped with ropes to assist hikers.

  • Highlights:

    • First Falls: Located just 450m from the trailhead, featuring a deep, clear pool.

    • Second Falls: The tallest of the series.

    • Third Falls: Often called "The Big Crack," where the water drops into a narrow, rocky ravine.

    • Swimming: The deep pools at the base of the falls are popular for swimming during warmer months.

Driving Directions: From Campbell River, head north on Highway 19 toward Port Hardy. Turn left onto Menzies Road (also known as Menzies Main). The trailhead is approximately 3–4 km down this gravel logging road, which often has potholes.

Trailhead: The trailhead is discrete and unmarked, located on the right-hand side of the road just before or after the second bridge crossing Mohun Creek.

Parking: There is no official parking lot. Hikers typically park on the shoulder of the road near the bridge; parking is generally easier on the far side of the bridge, where the shoulder is wider.

Pet Friendly: The trail is suitable for larger dogs, though small dogs may struggle with some of the steeper, rooty sections.

Seasonal Conditions: The falls are most powerful during the rainy season (October–April) and spring snowmelt. In the summer, they offer a gentler flow suitable for swimming.

Safety Note: Watch for logging trucks on Menzies Road. In wet weather, walking poles are highly recommended due to slippery conditions.
