Lived in Victoria for awhile and one day I spent walking around Beacon Hill Park. First thing I noticed was a certain peace that comes over you the moment you step into the park. Once, we watch a lighting storm pass over the Juan De Fuca straight to Washington.
Right in the heart of Victoria, this sprawling 200-acre green space feels more like a quiet escape than a city park — a place where ocean air meets wildflowers, peacocks wander freely, and time slows down just enough to notice the details.
It’s the kind of spot that reminds you how simple beauty can be — the sound of ducks on the pond, the smell of blooming gardens, the view of the Olympic Mountains rising across the water.
Walk under massive Garry oaks, through rose gardens and secret trails, and out to the Mile 0 marker (popular social media spot), the symbolic start of the Trans-Canada Highway. And when you reach the cliffs overlooking the ocean, it’s impossible not to pause. There’s always wind, salt spray, and a sense that you’re standing on the edge of something bigger.
So many things to See & Do
The Petting Zoo (Beacon Hill Children’s Farm): A local favorite with goats, pigs, and friendly animals — perfect for families or anyone needing a smile.
The Cameron Bandshell: Live music and community performances through summer.
Goodacre Lake & Bridges: Serene, tree-lined ponds where ducks and herons gather.
The Garry Oak Ecosystem: One of the last remaining in BC — a reminder of the Island’s natural heritage.
Totem Pole Viewpoint: Home to the world’s second-tallest totem pole, carved by Mungo Martin and other Kwakwaka’wakw artists in 1956.
Ocean Walk: Wander out to the cliffs along Dallas Road — the sunsets here are unforgettable.
Where to access and park:
Address: Douglas Street at Dallas Road, Victoria
Parking: Multiple free lots and street parking throughout the park
Facilities: Washrooms, playgrounds, picnic areas, walking paths, and gardens
Accessibility: Flat and paved in most areas; easy for all abilities
Pet Friendly: Yes, but leash required in most zones
Other things to do in the area:
Mile 0 Marker & Terry Fox Statue – an iconic photo stop and the start of Canada’s cross-country highway.
Cook Street Village – just a few blocks away for coffee, gelato, brunch, or pizza.
Dallas Road Beach Trail – great for dog walks and sea breeze therapy.
Go early in the morning or near sunset — you’ll catch the soft light through the trees and often have the ocean viewpoints to yourself. Bring a picnic, wander slowly, and let yourself get a little lost. It’s one of those rare places that feels both alive and calm at the same time.
