If there’s one place on Vancouver Island that feels like stepping into another world, it’s Paradise Meadows. Perched high on Mount Washington, just past the ski resort, this alpine wonderland is where emerald-green meadows meet mirror-still lakes, and winding boardwalks lead you through fields of wildflowers, mountain hemlock, and endless fresh air.
It’s the kind of place that makes you stop, breathe, and remember why you fell in love with the island in the first place.
The Trail
Trailhead: From the Mount Washington Alpine Resort parking lot, follow signs for the Strathcona Park Paradise Meadows Trailhead (at the end of Nordic Drive).
Distance: Choose your own adventure — from a short 2 km loop to longer hikes that connect with the backcountry.
Time: 1–6 hours, depending on the route
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
The trails here are beautifully maintained — raised boardwalks wind through alpine wetlands, small lakes, and wildflower-filled meadows. Whether you’re up for a peaceful morning stroll or a full-day trek into Strathcona Provincial Park, this area is a gateway to both.
Hiking Options
Paradise Meadows Loop (2 km): An easy, accessible trail with wooden boardwalks perfect for families or relaxed walkers.
Lake Helen Mackenzie / Battleship Lake Loop (8 km): A scenic favorite! Wander through old-growth forest, meadows, and along two stunning mountain lakes.
Mount Albert Edward Trail: For experienced hikers — this route takes you into the true alpine, offering jaw-dropping panoramic views on clear days.
What You’ll See
Wildflowers: In July and August, the meadows explode in color — pink mountain heather, yellow buttercups, and white bog orchids.
Lakes & Reflections: Helen Mackenzie and Battleship Lakes are famous for their glass-calm reflections of the mountains and sky.
Wildlife: Keep your eyes open for marmots, whiskey jacks, and black-tailed deer. If you’re lucky, you might spot a Vancouver Island marmot — one of Canada’s rarest mammals!
Mountain Views: Look east toward the Comox Valley and west into the heart of Strathcona Park — it’s pure, untouched beauty.
