Historic

Fossil Beach is one of Hornby Island’s most fascinating and unique shoreline walks, where layers of sandstone reveal fossils dating back over 70 million years to the Late Cretaceous period. Ammonites, clams, and marine plant fossils can still be seen embedded in the rock, offering a rare glimpse into when this area was covered by a warm, shallow sea.

The beach is best explored at low tide, when more of the fossil-rich rock shelves are exposed. Walking slowly along the shoreline reveals ancient textures, tidal pools, and sweeping ocean views toward Denman Island and Vancouver Island.

History & Respect

This area is part of a significant paleontological landscape. Collecting or removing fossils is prohibited—they are protected so future generations can experience them in place. Please look, photograph, and leave everything where you find it.

Fossil Beach is a powerful reminder of Hornby Island’s deep history and adds an unforgettable layer to any island visit.
