Within Strathcona Provincial Park on the southern shore of Buttle Lake, Ralph River Campground is one of those places that instantly quiets the noise of everyday life. It’s where ancient trees tower above your tent, the lake glimmers in morning light, and the air feels cleaner, calmer, and just a little bit wild.

Surrounded by mountains, forest, and crystal-clear water, Ralph River is a peaceful, family-friendly basecamp for exploring the heart of Vancouver Island’s oldest provincial park.

Ralph River sits within a lush pocket of old-growth rainforest — giant cedars, moss-covered logs, and the sound of birdsong all around. The campground edges the shores of Buttle Lake, offering easy access for swimming, kayaking, fishing, or simply relaxing at the water’s edge.

It’s quieter and more remote than the more northern Buttle Lake Campground, making it ideal for travelers who crave space and stillness.

Lake Life: Swim, paddle, or fish right from the shore. The calm waters are perfect for canoes and kayaks.

Lower Myra Falls Trail – Easy 1.5 km loop with stunning waterfalls.

Upper Myra Falls - Moderate 7.5 km in and out with a tall waterfall

Elk River Trail – A full-day or overnight hike through alpine valleys (trailhead 10 minutes away).

Karst Creek Trail – 1.8 km loop through mossy rainforest and limestone formations.

Wildlife Viewing: Watch for eagles, deer, and even black bears from a safe distance.

Photography: The combination of lake reflections, waterfalls, and towering mountains makes this a dream for photographers.

Camping:

Sites: 75 large, private, shaded campsites (first-come, first-served)

Facilities: Pit toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, hand pump water (no showers)

Access: Located off Westmin Road, roughly 60 km southwest of Campbell River

Open Season: Typically mid-May to late September

Fees: Standard BC Parks campground rates apply

Pets: Allowed but must be on leash at all times

Nearby:

Lower Myra Falls – One of Vancouver Island’s most beautiful waterfalls

Lupin Falls – Short, easy trail to a hidden cascade

Lady Falls – 30-meter plunge visible from a short walk off Highway 28

Mount Washington Alpine Resort – 1.5-hour drive away for hiking or gondola views

If you can, grab one of the lakeside sites — morning coffee with mountain reflections is pure magic. Bring everything you need, as there are no stores nearby. The road is paved but winding, so take your time and enjoy the drive.
