Note: This route is remote and has no cell service. The gravel road is rough, and I do not recommend using a car. Your vehicle must be capable; a 4x4 could save your life. Trucks and SUVs only! Make sure to pack extra food, water, batteries, fuel (fuel station in Tahsis), clothing, and snacks. This road is an active logging road, which means watch out and give way.

Tahsis is a tiny, remote village tucked deep within the rugged fjords of Vancouver Island’s west coast. Surrounded by towering mountains, dense rainforest, and pristine ocean inlets, it’s a place where nature feels raw, untouched, and overwhelmingly peaceful. Once a bustling logging town, Tahsis has transformed into a quiet, adventure-driven destination loved by outdoor enthusiasts, anglers, kayakers, and travelers looking for true wilderness.

Reached by a long, winding forest-service road from Gold River, the drive into Tahsis is part of the experience. Vistas of valleys, rivers, cliffs, and old-growth forest unfold with every turn. When you finally reach town, it feels like a hidden outpost at the end of the world. Life is slow, friendly, and closely tied to the ocean.

The village sits on the edge of Tahsis Inlet, which leads out to Nootka Sound. One of BC’s most legendary marine ecosystems. Orcas, humpbacks, sea otters, seals, black bears, and wolves are commonly spotted in the region.

Tahsis Is Known For World-Class Fishing - Tahsis is a hotspot for salmon, halibut, and lingcod fishing. Travelers come from around the world for easy ocean access and experienced local guides. The marinas and docks are the heartbeat of the town during summer.

Kayaking & Boating - With calm inlets, sheltered coves, and island chains, Tahsis is one of the best starting points for multi-day paddling trips through Nootka Sound. The waters are glassy at sunrise and sunset — perfect for scenic paddles.

Hiking & Wilderness Trails - The mountains around Tahsis are steep, wild, and incredibly green.

Trails include:

Leiner River Estuary Trail – coastal views, wildlife, and tidal landscapes

Upana Caves (nearby) – a network of limestone caves open for hiking and exploring

Nootka Trail access – for adventure-level backpackers

Caving & Karst Landscapes - Tahsis sits in one of Canada’s most significant karst regions. The area features caves, sinkholes, underground rivers, and dramatic limestone formations.

Wildlife Viewing - Black bears grazing by the river. Sea otters floating in kelp forests. Whales feeding in Nootka Sound. Eagles circling the inlet. It’s one of the best places on Vancouver Island for truly wild wildlife experiences.

Tahsis has a small but warm community vibe.

A few local accommodations (cabins, fishing lodges, small inns)

  • Westview Marina and Lodge (restaurant)

  • Nootka Gold in Tahsis

  • Moutcha Bay Resort

  • Newton Cove Resort

There is a small community center, a boat launch, and waterfront parks. It’s a very quiet town that was once busy.

Tahsis gives you that feeling of being far away from everything, surrounded by deep wilderness and Pacific beauty.

Anyone wanting peace, quiet, and true nature. It’s one of Vancouver Island’s best-kept secrets — rugged, real, and unforgettable.
