Just 25 minutes from downtown Victoria, Goldstream Provincial Park feels like stepping into another world — one where towering old-growth forests, moss-covered trees, and rushing waterfalls remind you just how wild Vancouver Island really is.
It’s a place where gold once shimmered in the river, salmon still fight their way upstream each fall, and families, hikers, and travelers come to slow down, breathe deep, and reconnect with nature.
The Heart of the Park
When you first arrive, the scent of cedar and damp earth fills the air. The Goldstream River winds through a lush rainforest canopy of Douglas firs, bigleaf maples, and red cedars — some over 600 years old. The forest floor glows green with ferns, while moss drapes from branches like nature’s own lace.
The Visitor Centre is a great place to start — here, you’ll find educational exhibits, park maps, and friendly staff who can tell you about the salmon run, wildlife sightings, and best hiking routes.
Must-See Highlights
Niagara Falls (Vancouver Island’s Hidden Gem)
Just a short 15-minute trail from the day-use parking lot leads to Niagara Falls — a stunning 47-metre waterfall that plunges into a narrow, mossy canyon. It’s breathtaking in every season, especially after rain when the flow is strongest.
(Tip: The trail is short but uneven — wear sturdy shoes, especially in winter.)
The Salmon Run (October–December)
Every fall, thousands of chum salmon return to spawn in the Goldstream River. It’s one of the most awe-inspiring natural events on the Island — and a reminder of the delicate balance between land, water, and life. Watch from the bridges or riverbank (quietly and respectfully) as eagles gather overhead and the river comes alive.
Mount Finlayson Hike
For the adventurous, Mount Finlayson offers one of the best views on the South Island. The trail is steep and rocky (4 km round trip), but from the top, you’ll see Finlayson Arm, Victoria, and even the Olympic Mountains across the strait.
