Thimphu - Dochula Chorten
Historic
Directions

Sitting high on the mountain pass, Dochula Chorten feels like a quiet circle of calm above the clouds. The 108 white stupas wrap around the hill in perfect symmetry, creating a powerful visual rhythm that changes completely with the weather. On clear days, the space feels open and vast; in fog or low clouds, it becomes mysterious and almost otherworldly, with layers of mist drifting through the chortens.

This spot is one of those locations where conditions define the photograph. The scene can change in minutes with the sun, fog, clouds, or even snow, so every visit is different. The pass itself feels raw and exposed, which adds to the atmosphere and the sense of being somewhere truly elevated and remote.

Best Time to Photograph:
Highly weather-dependent. Light, visibility, and mood change rapidly here, so flexibility is key. Sometimes fog creates the most powerful images; sometimes clear skies reveal the full scale of the pass.
