Nijo Market in Sapporo is a compact, mostly seafood-focused market where you should go early for the freshest sushi and kaisendon and to avoid long lines; many stalls wind down by mid-afternoon. Bring cash and small bills because not every vendor takes cards, and vendors are used to preparing purchases to eat on the spot so you can buy a bowl or a grilled scallop and eat standing at a counter. Don’t expect hard bargaining; staff are friendly but often have limited English, so pointing and simple phrases work fine. If you want to take home crab, uni, or ikura, ask about packing and cold storage so it survives your trip home.
