Navigation & Offline Maps

  • Maps.me: Best offline maps for driving and hiking. Shows unofficial shortcuts, campsites, viewpoints.

  • Google Maps (Offline): Download entire regions ahead of time. Good for driving, gas stations, supermarkets, hospitals.

  • iOverlander: Road trip treasure. User-generated spots: wild camping, water refill spots, safe parking areas. Especially useful in remote areas.

Tip: Download offline maps before entering national parks or crossing borders—coverage is often lost between towns.

Tip: ALWAYS refuel when you see a gas station. In Argentine Patagonia, YPF stations are reliable and often have Wi-Fi.

Hiking & Trail Apps

  • AllTrails: Detailed hiking routes, reviews, elevation, GPX tracks. Covers popular trails like W-Trek and Laguna de los Tres.

  • Maps.me: Great backup for trails without signal, especially in Torres del Paine.

  • Parques Argentina + Conaf.cl bookmarked: CONAF manages national parks in Chile. Some treks require registration/permits.

Note: For Torres del Paine, you might need to show your reservation permit—keep screenshots accessible.

Safety & Outdoors

  • Windy: Patagonia has extreme wind. This app predicts wind intensity—crucial for driving and hiking ridge lines.

  • Star Walk 2 + Photopills (if you do night photography): Perfect for Milky Way planning.

Money, Payments & Border Crossings

  • Revolut: Avoid bad exchange rates and huge ATM fees.

Campervan

Spanish

  • Google Translate (download Spanish offline): Many small towns have little English spoken. Offline translation is a lifesaver.

Tip: Download Spanish (Latin America), not Spain’s version.
