The Pre-Trip Checklist

Documents & Admin Check your passport expiry date well in advance — many countries require at least 6 months validity beyond your travel dates. Research visa requirements early; some visas need to be arranged weeks ahead, while others are on arrival. Make digital copies of your passport, insurance, and bookings and store them in your email or cloud so you can access them even if your bag is stolen.

Connectivity Getting data abroad is simpler than ever. The easiest solution these days is an eSIM — a digital SIM you activate before you leave home, no physical card to swap, no hunting for a phone shop when you land, and your regular number stays active for calls the whole time.

After trying several eSIM providers across my trips through Southeast Asia, Africa, and Japan, I landed on Simify as my go-to. Coverage spans 150+ countries on a single platform, plans are affordable and flexible (you pay for what you need, nothing more), and activation is instant — buy online, scan a QR code, done in about 5 minutes. No contract, no subscription, just a data plan for the duration of your trip. They also offer country-specific and regional plans, so you're never overpaying for global coverage you don't need.

Travel Insurance Non-negotiable. Medical care abroad can be eye-wateringly expensive, and a canceled flight or stolen camera can wipe out your savings. Look for a policy that covers medical evacuation, trip cancellation, and gear. Read the fine print on adventure activities — many standard policies exclude things like motorbike riding or scuba diving.

Money & Cards Notify your bank before you travel or you risk having your card blocked. Ideally carry two cards from different networks (Visa and Mastercard) in case one isn't accepted. Withdraw local cash early — airport ATMs are convenient but often charge high fees. For everyday spending, a travel card with no foreign transaction fees (Wise and Revolut are popular options) will save you a surprising amount over a long trip.

Health Prep Check whether you need vaccinations for your destination — some require proof of vaccination for entry. Pack a basic medical kit: rehydration salts, antihistamines, pain relief, blister plasters, and any prescription medication with enough supply plus a few extra days. If you wear glasses or contacts, bring a spare pair or your prescription.

Packing Roll, don't fold — it saves space and reduces creases. A universal power adapter is essential (plug types vary significantly between countries). Pack a portable charger; long days of using maps and translating menus drains batteries fast. And always keep one change of clothes and your valuables in your carry-on, not your checked bag.
