Tham Khao Luang is a magical cave shrine nestled 4km north of the town of Phetchaburi, Thailand. It is particularly popular with King Rama IV as he used to be a monk here. The main attractions of this magnificent place are numerous stalactites in various chambers inside its depths and its natural skylight by which a 'sun shower' occurs. The sun looks down through the skylight each morning at 9am-12pm, illuminating the primary Buddha image between February and April from its glow. Going further deep into the caves will reveal more hidden chambers and shrines that are separated by a stone gate that was built by Rama IV. Impressively, the surrounding cliffside path can be traveled by either foot or in one of the vehicles available for hire. Monkeys can often be seen begging for food near the entrance while experienced guides are also available if necessary. In all, Tham Khao Luang is an enthralling and memorable experience for any traveler.
