Kumano Hongu Taisha is an apt blend of history, tradition and modernity. Located in the Wakayama prefecture in Japan's Kii mountain range, the sacred shrine has been witness to more than 900 years of history. It consists of a majestic wooden frame that towers over its visitors as they climb the final stone staircase to the sanctuary. The temple features noteworthy architecture, where sophisticated building techniques utilizing wooden joints rather than nails can be seen. It is also known for hosting spectacular events such as the Yata-no-Hi fire festival in August and the Kumano Hongu Taisha spring festival. Visitors have various transportation options, from taking the bus at Shingu, Kii-Tanabe or Shirahama stations to making the pilgrimage through the rugged mountains. A major highlight is the largest torii gate in the world, which can be found at the original location of the shrine in Oyunohara. Here, one can immerse in nature's beauty while uncovering the secrets within its mysterious past.
