Situated atop Mt. Iimori, Aizu Sazaedo is an impressive temple that stands out amongst other temples in Japan. Constructed of traditional Japanese woodwork in 1796 and standing at 16.5 meters tall, this National Important Cultural Property has two sets of stairways that spiral up the pagoda-like building like the shell of a sea snail, hence its name - meaning 'Sea Snail Temple'. Those ascending and descending the stairs never meet; only one person can ascend or descend at a time. This unique feature allows visitors to make a symbolic journey similar to the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage to 33 Buddhist temples. One was said to gain good fortune and merit by praying at all 33 designated stops of the Sazae Temple. Besides the rare structure of the temple, travelers should also explore nearby attractions, such as the Byakkotai Memorial Hall and Folklore and Historical Museum which honors the 19 young cadets of the Byakkotai (White Tiger Troop) who committed ritual suicide during the Boshin Civil War.
