Unganji is an awe-inspiring Zen temple sure to excite visitors of Tochigi prefecture’s Otawara city. Part of the Rinzai School, it was built in the Heian era during the Daiji years (1126 ~1131). The two-story main gate offers a truly unique experience, as described by the famous Japanese poet Basho Matsuo after having visited there. Not only does this temple offer an exquisite zen experience, but it is also one of Japan’s four major temples for zen practices. Either alone or with friends, Unganji promises to leave an unforgettable impression on those who visit.
