Understanding how the National Park system works will save you a lot of money and logistical headaches.

1. What is SANParks?
South African National Parks (SANParks) is the government body responsible for managing the country’s 21 national parks (Kruger, Table Mountain, Addo Elephant, Tsitsikamma, Knysna, Wilderness, Kgalagadi Transfrontier, Augrabies Falls, Richtersveld, Mokala, Namaqua, Tankwa Karoo, Golden Gate Highlands, Camdeboo (Valley of Desolation), Mountain Zebra, West Coast, Agulhas, Marakele, Mapungubwe, Bontebok, Langjan)
Unlike some countries where you pay per vehicle, SANParks charges a Daily Conservation Fee per person. This fee is applicable for every day you stay inside the park. If you stay for 5 nights, you pay for 5 days.
Note: Not every nature reserve in SA is a SANParks property. Some are managed by provincial bodies like CapeNature (Western Cape) or Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (KwaZulu-Natal), like Hluhluwe-Imfolozi.
2. How to Book Your Accommodation in the National Parks
The SANParks website is where you book your accommodation inside the park. This is essential for places like Kruger and Kgalagadi, which are really big. The website link is: sanparks.org.
Step-by-Step Booking:
Register: Create a profile first. You’ll need this to finalize any basket.
Check Availability: Use the "Book Your Trip" tab. You can filter by park, specific rest camp, and date.
The Grid View: If your dates are flexible, use the "Availability" grid. It shows you a 30-day window of what’s open across all camps in a park.
Pay Online: You generally pay the full amount (or a deposit) via credit card to secure the spot.
Pro Tip: Popular camps in Kruger or Addo book out months in advance. If you see a "sold out" notice, check back daily—cancellations are frequent!
3. When to get a WILD Card?
The WILD Card is a loyalty program that gives you unlimited access to most of South Africa’s parks for 365 days.
You should get one if:
For Internationals: You plan to spend more than 7 days in high-fee parks like Kruger or Addo. An International Couple Card costs roughly R6,495 ($350 approx.), whereas a week in Kruger for two would cost over R8,400 in daily fees.
For Locals: If you visit parks more than 3-4 times a year, it pays for itself almost instantly.
Note: You can buy your Wild Card online or at most main park gates. If you buy online, keep the digital receipt/confirmation on your phone! We got it at the entrance of Kgalagadi.
4. When To Book & Visit
Because SANParks is so popular with locals, the calendar revolves entirely around South African School Holidays. If you miss this, you’ll find yourself in long queues at gates or unable to find a single open campsite. Here are some things to consider:
1. Booking lead times
SANParks opens its booking window 11 months in advance.
Popular Camps (Skukuza, Lower Sabie, Addo Main Camp): You need to book 10–11 months out if you want to stay during school holidays or the dry winter season (June–August).
The "30-Day" Secret: Many people book 11 months in advance but fail to pay their deposit. SANParks automatically cancels unpaid bookings after 30 days. If a camp is full, check the website exactly one month after bookings opened— you’ll often see a "flush" of new availability.
Last Minute: If you are flexible, you can often find spots 2–3 weeks before a trip due to cancellations. The SANParks website updates in real-time!
2. Avoid crowds at busy seasons
Avoid these dates if you hate crowds, as parks often hit "Day Visitor" capacity and close their gates early:
Peak "Crazy" Season (mid-December – mid-January ): The summer holidays. It is hot, humid, and the parks are packed with families.
Easter Weekend: Every South African goes camping.
Winter Holidays (Late June – July): Prime game-viewing time. Since it’s the dry season, animals congregate at waterholes, making it very busy but rewarding.
Long Weekends: South Africans love a long weekend
