  • Why Visit?: Experience one of the most surreal and hidden architectural phenomena in Istanbul: a Russian Orthodox "rooftop church." Built in the late 19th century, Aya Andrea was designed as a combination of a place of worship and a rooftop hostel for Russian pilgrims who arrived by ship in Karakƶy on their sacred journey to Mount Athos or Jerusalem. Hidden atop an unassuming, gritty commercial building (han), it offers an unbelievable transition from chaotic city streets to a mystical, incense-filled sanctuary.

  • What to Do?: Climb up the flights of stairs inside the historic building to find the top-floor church, where you can admire beautifully preserved religious icons, traditional oil lamps, and classic Russian Orthodox artwork.

  • Insider Tip: Because this is an active place of worship serving a very small community and not a tourist museum, the building doors are generally only open during Sunday morning liturgies (usually around 09:00 AM) or on major Orthodox feast days. Dress modestly (women are traditionally expected to wear headscarves before entering Russian churches), knock gently, and maintain absolute silence. Photography is often restricted inside, so prioritize soaking in the unique, timeless atmosphere over taking snapshots.
