Kuruçeşme Site: Tucked into a sloping hill along the Bosphorus, this 1798 structure is world-famous for its massive subterranean holy spring (ayazma), where crystal-clear water collects into an indoor marble basin believed for centuries to possess healing properties.
What to Do?: In Kurtuluş, admire the incredibly detailed, gold-leafed iconostasis and the peaceful courtyard. In Kuruçeşme, step inside to marvel at the unique Baroque elements on the women's gallery and inspect the mystical, indoor water sanctuary.
Insider Tip: Unlike most Greek Orthodox churches in Istanbul that remain locked outside of service hours, the Kurtuluş Aya Dimitri Church is open to the public every single day. If you plan to visit the Kuruçeşme branch, try to time your trip around October 26th—the Feast Day of St. Demetrius—to witness a vibrant, centuries-old local autumn festival (panayır).
Neden Gitmeli?: * Kurtuluş (Tatavla) Yapısı: Kökleri 16. yüzyıla kadar uzanan bu heybetli kilise, eski İstanbul’un en önemli Rum semtlerinden Tatavla’nın ana cemaat merkezidir ve mahallenin o köklü, çok kültürlü hafızasını yaşatır.
Kuruçeşme Yapısı: Boğaz hattının yamacında, 1798 yılında inşa edilen bu kilise ise, yapının hemen içinde yer alan devasa ve gizemli kutsal su kaynağı (ayazma) ile ün salmıştır. Mermer havuzda toplanan bu suyun asırlardır şifalı olduğuna inanılır.
