šŸ“ Aya Kiryaki Kilisesi (St. Kyriaki Church)

šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§ ENGLISH

  • Why Visit?: Tucked away in the historic Kumkapı neighborhood—traditionally an old Greek and Armenian fishermen's quarter—Aya Kiryaki is a beautiful testament to Istanbul's cosmopolitan religious heritage. Dedicated to Saint Kyriaki, the current grand structure was rebuilt in 1894 by the prominent architect Periklis Fotiadis following an earthquake. It stands out as a brilliant example of late-Ottoman neoclassical church architecture, featuring a majestic dome and a distinct stone facade.

  • What to Do?: Admire the elegant symmetry of the exterior and its striking bell tower. If you manage to step inside, take time to appreciate the fine wood-carved iconostasis, the glittering chandeliers, and the serene, light-filled nave beneath the central dome.

  • Insider Tip: While Kumkapı is world-famous for its lively seafood restaurants and historic square, its historical backstreets hold incredible cultural layers. The church is typically closed to the public on weekdays for security, so the absolute best time to catch it open is during the Sunday morning liturgy (usually between 09:00 AM and 11:00 AM). Combine your architectural exploration with a walk to the nearby Armenian Patriarchate, followed by a traditional fish lunch by the Marmara shore.
