Built by a prominent, musical Sephardic Jewish family, it houses a mesmerizing lobby filled with pristine murals and an antique elevator that famously tells the time.
Why Visit?: Standing proudly on the historic Meşrutiyet Avenue in the Tepebaşı/Pera district, the Cordova Freres Apartmanı (Cordova Brothers Apartment) was built in 1922 by the Cordova family, descendants of Sephardic Jews who immigrated to Istanbul from Spain in 1492. Commissioned by composer Nesim Cordova, this building is a gorgeous example of late Ottoman eclectic and Art Nouveau residential architecture. Right above the grand entrance door, you are greeted by an incredibly rare inscription detailing the building's name and its 1922 construction date written seamlessly in both French and Ottoman Turkish.
What to Do?: Step through the historic entrance to admire the apartment's legendary lobby. The walls feature beautifully preserved, vividly colorful painted murals depicting serene landscapes that look so fresh they could have been painted yesterday. Look past the murals to discover the building's crown jewel: its century-old, ornate iron-cage elevator built by the famed Stigler firm. Nestled uniquely inside the elevator cabin is a custom antique clock crafted by the legendary German watchmaker Gustav Becker (GB)—a special addition requested by the family's musician, Moshe Cordova.
Insider Tip: For decades, the elevator’s unique built-in clock sat broken and frozen in time, but a meticulous restoration has brought it back to life, ticking perfectly once more. Keep in mind that this is a private, active residential building rather than a standard commercial museum, so please be quiet and respectful of the residents when peering into the lobby. If you happen to encounter the legendary elderly gentleman who has lived in the building for decades and always steps out wearing an elegant fedora hat (fötr şapka), be sure to give him a warm smile and a polite hello!
Neden Gitmeli?: Beyoğlu Tepebaşı’ndaki tarihi Meşrutiyet Caddesi üzerinde yükselen Cordova Freres Apartmanı (Cordova Biraderler Apartmanı), kökleri 1492'de İspanya'dan İstanbul'a göç eden Sefarad Yahudilerine uzanan Cordova ailesi tarafından 1922 yılında inşa ettirilmiştir.
