• Why Visit?: Cast in 479 BC to celebrate the Greek victory over the Persians and brought from Delphi by Emperor Constantine, the Serpent Column is one of Istanbul’s oldest and most enigmatic relics. Though the three serpent heads are no longer attached (one is safely preserved in the Istanbul Archaeology Museum), the twisted bronze trunk holds centuries of mythical history right in the open air of the ancient Hippodrome.

• What to Do?: Look closely at the intertwined coils of the bronze snakes and peer into the protective pit to observe just how much lower the original Byzantine Hippodrome floor was compared to the modern street level.

• Insider Tip: Most tourists walk past it in seconds, but the best way to appreciate it is from a low angle. Crouch down near the railing and frame the twisted bronze column so that the majestic minarets of the Sultanahmet (Blue) Mosque loom directly in the background—it perfectly encapsulates 2,500 years of layered history in a single shot.

• Neden Gitmeli?: Perslere karşı kazanılan zaferin anısına MÖ 479'da Delfi’deki Apollon Tapınağı için yapılan ve İmparator Konstantin tarafından İstanbul’a getirilen Yılanlı Sütun, şehrin en eski ve en gizemli açık hava kalıntılarından biridir. Üç yılan kafası günümüze tek parça ulaşamamış olsa da (biri İstanbul Arkeoloji Müzesi’ndedir), birbirine dolanmış bronz gövde asırlardır Sultanahmet Meydanı’nda zamana meydan okumaya devam ediyor.
