Why the "Sixth" District? When the Ottoman Empire decided to modernize its urban administration in 1857, they created the country's very first Western-style municipality in Beyoğlu. Curiously, they named it the Altıncı Daire-i Belediye (The Sixth District), completely skipping districts one through five. Why? Because they deliberately modeled it after Paris's prosperous and sophisticated 6th arrondissement, aiming to bring French urban elegance straight to the heart of Istanbul.
Why Visit?: Standing proudly at Şişhane Square, the historic Beyoğlu Municipality building is an architectural titan and a monumental milestone in Turkish civic history. Completed in 1883 by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista Barborini, this elegant structure is the first purpose-built modern municipal hall in the Ottoman Empire. It reflects the late 19th-century Westernization era of the empire, showcasing grand European design right at the crossroads of Pera and Galata.
