  • Why Visit?: Discovered entirely by chance during the restoration of a 19th-century Ottoman military hospital (now KazlıƧeşme Sanat), the Zeytinburnu Mosaic Museum is a thrilling archaeological breakthrough. It houses the largest and most intact Late Roman and Early Byzantine floor mosaic found outside Istanbul's ancient city walls. Dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries, this spectacular site displays vibrant geometric motifs alongside ancient sarcophagi, offering a mesmerizing look into the hidden, multi-layered history of the city.

  • What to Do?: Walk directly over the grand ancient floor panels via sleek, transparent glass walkways, admire the remarkably preserved Roman sarcophagus nestled beneath the floor, and explore the contemporary art exhibitions hosted in the upper galleries of the same cultural complex.

  • Insider Tip: Don’t just look at the geometric patterns from a distance; peer closely into the excavated pit beneath the glass panels where the sarcophagus rests. During its discovery, archaeologists found rare fragments of purple velvet fabric inside it—a true symbol of ancient nobility. Visit early on a weekday morning when the glass floors are pristine and uncrowded, allowing you to capture a flawless, vertical top-down photograph of the ancient masterpieces below your feet.
