  • Why Visit?: Standing proudly as the largest and most magnificent active Roman Catholic church in Istanbul, St. Anthony of Padua is a breathtaking masterpiece of Venetian Neo-Gothic architecture. Built between 1906 and 1912 by the famous Italian-Levantine architect Giulio Mongeri, its striking red-brick facade provides a surreal, European contrast right in the middle of Istanbul's bustling İstiklal Avenue. It also carries immense historical weight; Pope John XXIII (affectionately known in Turkey as "The Turkish Pope" due to his deep love for the country) preached here for a decade before ascending to the papacy.

  • What to Do?: Pass through the grand iron gates and walk between the two historic apartment blocks designed to generate revenue for the church. Step into the cavernous, Latin-cross planned interior to marvel at the soaring ribbed vaults, majestic stained-glass windows, and the exquisite mosaics. Follow the local tradition by purchasing a small candle near the entrance, lighting it, and placing it on the iron racks while making a silent wish.

  • Insider Tip: Because it sits directly on one of the busiest pedestrian streets in the world, the church is constantly flooded with curious tourists, which can sometimes break its sacred silence. To experience its true, mystical serenity, try to visit early in the morning right when the doors open at 09:00 AM. Admission is completely free, but always remember to maintain absolute silence and respect those in prayer. If you happen to be in Istanbul during Christmas Eve or Easter, the midnight mass here is an absolutely legendary cultural spectacle—just make sure to arrive at least an hour early to secure a spot!

  • Ne Yapmalı?: İstiklal’in o bitmek bilmeyen insan selinden sıyrılıp, kiliseye gelir sağlamak amacıyla ƶn tarafa inşa edilmiş tarihi ikiz apartmanların arasından avluya geƧin.
