What & Why to Try the Food in Vietnam (our Favorites, also for kids)

Julian De Rosa

North Vietnam, Vietnam

For me, food is one of the best ways to understand Vietnam and this country is a dream for that. Eating here isn’t just about taste, it’s about culture, daily life, and slowing down to observe what’s happening around you. Most meals are simple, fresh, and deeply rooted in tradition.

Banh Mi

This was one of our go-to foods. It’s quick, affordable, and incredibly flavorful. The mix of crispy baguette, fresh herbs, pickled vegetables, and savory fillings is the perfect reflection of Vietnam itself - simple, balanced, and full of character. Ideal for breakfast, lunch, or a quick snack while exploring.

Egg Coffee

A Hanoi specialty and something you have to try at least once. It’s surprisingly smooth and creamy, almost like a dessert, but still with a strong coffee kick. Watching it being prepared and enjoyed by locals makes the experience even more special. If you’re unsure, trust me - it’s much better than it sounds. like tiramisu for drinking. You can have it cold or warm, we like it better warm. But try both!

Coconut Coffee

Refreshing, rich, and slightly sweet - coconut coffee quickly became a favorite for us, especially in the heat. The combination of strong Vietnamese coffee with creamy coconut creates a perfect balance and is a great option if you prefer something less bitter.

Pho

It's a delicious noodle soup that you can order with various meat or vegetarian ingredients. Our children ate it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and loved it.

Pho is more than just a dish in Vietnam – it’s a daily ritual. Sitting on small plastic stools, eating a steaming bowl of pho while the city wakes up around you is an experience in itself.

Spring rolls (and summer rolls)

For us as a family, spring rolls were a hit because they’re light, not spicy, and everyone can choose their own fillings. Even the kids loved rolling, dipping, and sharing them together at the table.

Hanoi Beer

If you like beer, we liked this one. Cheers!
