Switzerland is honestly one of the BEST countries in the world for family hiking.

The trails are incredibly well marked, nature is beautiful everywhere, and there are so many hikes perfect for kids.

But mountain weather and alpine terrain should never be underestimated, especially with children.

These are our biggest tips as a Swiss family hiking a lot with kids 👇

🌦️ Always check the weather first

Mountain weather changes FAST in Switzerland.

Before every hike we check:
MeteoSwiss app
• Webcams of the area

Especially in spring (April/May), there can still be snow higher up even when valleys are warm.

Our tip:
Just google:
“place name + webcam”

This helps check:
• Visibility
• Clouds/fog
• Snow conditions
• Weather in real time

🥾 Understand Swiss hiking trail markings

Swiss hiking trails are color coded.

🟡 Yellow trails (T1)
Easy hiking paths.
Usually suitable for most families and kids.

⚪🔴⚪ Red-white-red trails (T2–T3)
Mountain hiking trails.

These can include:
• Steeper terrain
• Narrow paths
• Roots & rocks
• Exposed sections

Still beautiful for families with hiking experience, but choose according to your children’s abilities.

Our recommendation:
For younger kids or casual hikers, mostly stay on yellow-marked hiking trails.

You find the color/difficulty also on the signpost where you can follow along.

⚠️ Very important:
Always stay on the official hiking trails (“Wanderwege”).

Leaving trails can be dangerous because of:
• Steep terrain
• Loose rocks
• Cliffs
• Sudden weather changes

🧥 Dress in layers

Even in summer, mountains can suddenly become cold.

We always dress in layers:
• T-shirt
• Fleece/pullover
• Rain jacket

Because weather can change VERY quickly in the Alps.

🌧️ Always bring a rain jacket

🥾 Proper shoes matter

Good hiking shoes or hiking boots make a huge difference.

Especially after rain, trails can become muddy and slippery.

For mountain hikes:
Avoid normal city sneakers if possible.

💧 Bring water bottles

One of the best Switzerland hacks:

Most fountains and tap water are drinkable.

If water is NOT safe to drink, there must be a sign saying so.

We refill our bottles constantly during hikes.

🍎 Snacks = lifesaver with kids

Never underestimate snack power 😅

We always bring:
• Fruit
• Nuts
• Sandwiches
• Chocolate
• Crackers/snacks

Picnic breaks honestly make hikes much more fun for kids. You can find cheap snacks in Migros, Coop or Lidl.

🚠 Don’t overplan

One of the biggest mistakes:
Trying to do too much.

With kids:
• Choose shorter hikes
• Plan extra time
• Stop often
• Let them play & explore

The experience matters more than reaching the destination fast.

As a Swiss family, hiking became one of our favorite ways to spend time together.

And honestly:
Some of our children’s happiest moments happened outside in the mountains:
• Throwing stones into lakes
• Finding waterfalls
• Watching cows
• Eating snacks with mountain views 🏔️❤️

Switzerland is truly amazing for family hiking - if you go slowly, stay flexible, and enjoy the journey.
