Wulanhada Volcano Geopark, nestled in Inner Mongolia, is like a natural "volcano museum" showcasing over 30 majestic volcanoes scattered across the grassland.

About Wulanhada

The area known as Wulanhada is a expanse of land with mulitiple volcanoes, a few of which had been operated for mining.

The most famous volcano is the number 6 volcano with the majority of it being quarried out as a mine.

That said, if you've made the trip, it's worth spending some time and exploring the number 3,4,5,6,7,8 volcanoes, going for a walk on/ around them and snapping some photos!

The grassland that surround them is also part of the experience, with the occasional herd of horses moving across the land followed by their owners.

Note that the area is quickly developing with my last trip being far more constructed than my previous ones so I'd recommend going before it's too changed.

Getting to Wulanhada:

Getting here is a bit of a trek, but it's one that makes it a far more enjoyable experience.

1. Firstly, you'll have to take a train from Hohhot rail station to Ulanqab train station. This journey takes about 30-40 minutes with multiple trains an hour and costs about 50 yuan.

2. From Ulanqab you'll have to sort out a car, either driving yourself or getting a driver. Technically a taxi can work but I suggest you just work out a flat day fee to be able to explore the area- but that will depend on where you plan on staying.

3. Drive north for about 2 hours.

If you need a local driver, I can recommend this guy. He speaks no English so you'll have to regularly point to your phone to remind him to text you on WeChat so you can do the in-app translation, but he's a solid guy that won't break the bank.
