How to get around

Hong Kong boasts a highly efficient and extensive public transport network that makes travelling around the city easy and convenient. Coming from London I actually think public transport in Hong Kong is quite cheap. Here’s a quick guide to help you navigate the various options available:

1. MTR (Mass Transit Railway): This is the most popular and efficient way to get around Hong Kong. The MTR covers most of the city, including major attractions, and operates from early morning to midnight. Make sure to pick up an Octopus Card, which is a rechargeable smart card that you can use on all forms of public transport.

2. Buses: Hong Kong has a comprehensive bus network that covers areas not serviced by the MTR. Double-decker buses are a common sight, and they offer a scenic way to see the city. Buses are equipped with electronic displays that show upcoming stops in English and Chinese.

3. Trams: Known affectionately as "Ding Dings," Hong Kong’s historic trams provide a charming and affordable way to travel along the northern side of Hong Kong Island. They operate between Shau Kei Wan and Kennedy Town and are an iconic part of the city’s landscape. This is a bit slower way of travelling but this was my favourite thing to do is hop on a tram and see the city.

4. Ferries: The Star Ferry is a must-do experience, offering stunning views of Victoria Harbour as it shuttles between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. In addition to the Star Ferry, there are ferries that connect to outlying islands like Lantau and Cheung Chau.

5. Taxis: Taxis in Hong Kong are relatively inexpensive compared to other major cities. They are colour-coded by area: red for urban, green for New Territories, and blue for Lantau Island. Fares are metered, and most drivers speak some English. The local taxi's though mostly want cash. If you don't have cash I think Uber is about the same price.
