22. New Hiking Fees

As of January 1, 2025, a new €3 fee applies to all official hiking trails (PR levadas and veredas) in Madeira. This initiative helps fund the maintenance and preservation of over 3,000 km of walking paths across the island—covering tasks like repairing damaged sections, maintaining safety barriers, and clearing fallen debris. The goal? To ensure all trails remain safe and enjoyable for both locals and visitors.

This small fee supports sustainable tourism and helps preserve Madeira’s natural beauty while managing the increasing number of hikers each year. The charge applies per person, per trail.

Exemptions:

Madeira residents (with Portuguese ID or Cartão de Residente na RAM)

Children under 12 years old

• Scan a QR code posted at the trail entrance.

• On some trails, you might encounter staff selling tickets on-site — but don’t count on it being available at all times or locations
