Picacho Peak State Park is a compact, dramatic desert park right off I-10 between Tucson and Phoenix, famous for its steep, cable-and-steps Summit Trail that gives fantastic views but is physically demanding and exposed. Also popular in the spring for wildflowers. Start hikes early in cooler months, carry plenty of water (plan for 2+ liters per person), wear sturdy shoes and gloves for the cables, and avoid the summit in extreme heat or storms; loose rock, rattlesnakes and steep drop-offs make parts of the route unsuitable for young kids, unsteady hikers or most dogs. Facilities are basic—a small visitor center, picnic spots and a modest campground with limited shade and water—so pay the day-use fee, plan for minimal services, and choose the shorter, non-technical trails if you want views without the scrambling.
