The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, Ireland

If you are travelling around the Republic of Ireland, you will need Euros. If you are planning to cross the border, Northern Ireland uses the British Pound Sterling (GBP). The bank notes issued by Northern Irish banks look different in appearance, but they are the same value. However - some retails may be unfamiliar with them. Ireland will not accept American dollars. Don't try to pay with them, and don't tip (if you were planning on tipping) with dollars.

Credit Cards are widely accepted in Ireland, but Visa and Mastercard are by far the most accepted. Additionally, almost every where you go Ireland uses tap to pay. I recommend loading your credit cards into your digital wallet and paying this way. There is no limit or a PIN required if you tap with a phone, watch, etc. If you pay with your physical card, you will most likely have to enter your PIN for every amount over €50. Pro tip - always pay in the local currency for the best exchange rate! Lastly, always carry a small amount of cash for rural places with no service, public transportation, or small business that prefer cash!
