The structure of the well is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture: 54 meters deep and 13 meters wide, it is famous for its double helix ramp.
The two spiral staircases, consisting of 248 steps each, are superimposed yet independent: this design allowed mules laden with water to descend and ascend without ever crossing paths. As you descend toward the bottom, light filters through the 72 large windows, creating an evocative atmosphere that transforms a work of civil engineering into a sensory experience.
