Eungella National Park, about 80 km west of Mackay, is a misty mountain haven teeming with biodiversity, boasting 860 plant species and an array of wildlife. It's a nature lover's paradise with plenty of activities such as camping, walking, cycling, and picnicking amidst its stunning views and lush surroundings.

What makes this park particularly special is the chance to see platypus in their natural habitat. These iconic Australian mammals, with their duck-like bills, otter-like bodies, and egg-laying habits, are notoriously shy and elusive. However, the Eungella Platypus Viewing Deck offers a fantastic opportunity to catch a glimpse of these fascinating creatures.

To spot them, visit at dawn or dusk. I arrived about 30 minutes before sunrise and shared the viewing area with just two other travelers, spotting multiple platypus frolicking and feeding in the peaceful waters. It was a magical first encounter with these elusive animals. As the sun rose, the platypus retreated to sleep, so getting there early is key to ensuring you don’t miss out.
