Overview

Sólheimajökull is one of Iceland’s most accessible glaciers and a popular stop along the South Coast. It is an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull, Iceland’s fourth largest ice cap, and stretches roughly eight kilometers in length and two kilometers in width.

Its rugged surface of blue ice, ash layers, and deep crevasses offers a dramatic landscape that draws visitors for glacier hiking, ice climbing, and ice cave exploration.

Volcanic Connection

Sólheimajökull lies on the edge of Mýrdalsjökull, which covers Katla, one of Iceland’s most powerful and closely monitored volcanoes. Nearby Eyjafjallajökull, which famously erupted in 2010, is also part of the same volcanic system. Although Katla has not erupted in over one hundred years, the area is under constant monitoring and tours operate only when conditions are completely safe.

Climate Impact

Like most glaciers in Iceland, Sólheimajökull is shrinking quickly. A newly formed glacial lagoon at its base shows how far the ice has retreated and currently by about fifty to one hundred meters every year. Scientists estimate that the glacier may disappear within a few decades if current warming trends continue.

Visiting the glacier offers not only a unique experience, but also a powerful look at the visible effects of climate change.
