Just a mile from Newquay but worlds away in feel, Crantock is a wide sweep of golden National Trust sand backed by dramatic grass-topped dunes, separated from Newquay by the tidal Gannel Estuary. At low tide you can cross the Gannel via the footbridge; at high tide a small foot ferry runs from Fern Pit. Dogs welcome all year. The estuary itself is stunning — kayakers, paddleboarders and wild swimmers use it at high tide, while at low tide the sand flats are perfect for exploring. Strong currents in the sea near the river mouth — only swim where lifeguards direct. Arrive early in summer, the car park fills fast.
