Lanzarote's former capital still has that quiet, time-forgotten atmosphere — white-washed buildings, cobblestone streets, a castle on the hill. If you can, come on a Sunday when the weekly market takes over the village: local crafts, food, live music. The castle (Castillo de Santa Bárbara) houses a small piracy museum — exactly as fun as it sounds. Around town you'll find plenty of local craft shops and a small aloe vera museum where you can buy products made right on the island.
