Just a couple of miles out of Grand Marais, you'll find the trailhead for Pincushion Mountain, your gateway to some truly spectacular views. The hike to the summit overlook is a roughly 4.5-mile loop that follows a mix of wide, rolling cross-country ski paths and the iconic Superior Hiking Trail. While the trail system can be a bit of a maze, the reward is a breathtaking 270-degree panorama of Lake Superior and the Devil Track River canyon. It's a year-round spot, perfect for hiking among the birches and pines in the summer or snowshoeing and skiing in the winter. And if you time it right, you can get back to the parking lot to see the most epic sunset over the expansive view of Lake Superior and Grand Marais.
