Málaga is a very easy city to enjoy, but there are a few common mistakes visitors make that can affect their experience. Knowing these beforehand can make your trip much smoother.

Eating in the main tourist squares

Restaurants directly on the biggest squares, like Plaza de la Constitución, tend to cater more to tourists. The food is often more expensive and not always the most authentic.

Walk one or two streets away and you’ll usually find much better tapas bars and more local restaurants.

Trying to eat too early

One of the biggest adjustments for visitors is the Spanish dining schedule.

Lunch usually happens around 2–4 PM, and dinner often starts from 9 PM onwards. Many kitchens won’t open for dinner before 8:30 PM.

If you try eating earlier, you’ll mostly find tourist-oriented restaurants.

Only staying in the historic centre

The centre of Málaga is beautiful, but some of the best food experiences are actually outside it.

Neighbourhoods like Pedregalejo and El Palo are famous for their seafood restaurants and beachside chiringuitos where locals go to eat espetos (grilled sardines).

They’re only about 15–20 minutes away by bus.

Ordering everything at once

Tapas culture in Málaga is more relaxed than that. Instead of ordering a full meal at once, locals usually start with a couple of dishes and add more as they go.

It’s a great way to try more dishes and enjoy the meal at a slower pace.
