Avoid eating too early

Many restaurants in Málaga don’t open their kitchens until 8:30–9:00 PM for dinner. If you try eating earlier you’ll mostly find tourist spots.

For a more local experience, aim for 9–10 PM dinner.

The best seafood is often on chalkboards

Many traditional restaurants don’t print seafood specials on the menu. Instead they’re written on a chalkboard inside the restaurant.

These dishes are usually the freshest catch of the day, so they’re often the best things to order.

Look for busy tapas bars

If a tapas bar is busy and people are standing at the bar, that’s usually a good sign. Many of Málaga’s best places are small, loud and crowded.

Don’t worry if there isn’t a table — standing with a drink and a tapa is completely normal.

Try Málaga’s sweet wine in a traditional tavern

Málaga has a historic sweet wine culture that many visitors miss. One of the best places to experience it is Antigua Casa de Guardia, where wine is poured straight from barrels and your tab is written in chalk on the bar.

It’s one of the most traditional drinking experiences in the city.

Walk one street away from the main squares

Restaurants directly on major tourist squares are usually more expensive and less authentic.

Walk just one or two streets away and you’ll often find much better food and prices.
