Porto, Portugal

Porto is very walkable, but each neighborhood feels quite different.

Here’s the easiest way to understand the city:

  • Ribeira – colorful riverside area with terraces, wine bars and tourist-heavy atmosphere

  • Baixa – central downtown area with cafés, shops and lots of classic food spots

  • Cedofeita – trendier local neighborhood with natural wine bars, bakeries and independent shops

  • Foz do Douro – coastal area near the beach, calmer and more residential

  • Vila Nova de Gaia – home to the famous port wine cellars across the river

Most first-time visitors stay around Baixa or Ribeira because you can walk almost everywhere, especially if you’re only visiting for 2/3 days.

Porto is hillier than many people expect, especially between the river and upper city, so comfortable shoes are essential.

Tip: don’t rush between neighborhoods. Porto works best when you slow down and stop often for coffee, wine or snacks along the way.
