Closed roads

Snow-covered fjords and mountains are stunning, but they require extra preparation to ensure a safe trip. Heavy snowfall in the mountains means many roads are closed for the winter season, so there are a few extra steps to take before hitting the road:

Check weather and road conditions
Winter weather can change quickly, and roads may suddenly become icy or close due to avalanches, ice, or strong winds. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration provides up-to-date information on road conditions and other useful traffic information. Check it out here:

Studded tires or winter tires
Winter tires are mandatory during the winter season, and in many areas, studded tires are highly recommended, especially if you’ll be driving in regions with heavy snow and ice, like mountain areas or smaller roads. Ensure your tires are in good condition and have adequate tread depth—at least 3 mm for winter tires, but preferably more for optimal safety. If you’re renting a car, vehicles typically come equipped with season-appropriate tires, but it’s always a good idea to double-check.

Driving on winter roads
Roads can be slippery, even if they look dry. “Black ice” is a significant hazard during winter, especially in shaded areas or on bridges. Keep a safe distance from the car in front, drive slowly, and be cautious in curves and downhill stretches.

If you’re driving over mountain passes, be especially prepared. Many of these roads may close at short notice due to poor weather. So stay updated as you go, and take things slow.
