Largo do Carmo ("Carmo Square") is located in the Chiado neighborhood and is full of historic and culturally relevant buildings and monuments.

The fisrt Portuguese university was founded here at the former Palácio Valadares ("Valadadres Palace") in 1290, by King Denis I, and later transferred to the city of Coimbra.

On April 25th, 1974, Largo do Carmo was also the epicenter of the Revolução dos Cravos ("Carnation Revolution"), overthrowing the dictatorial regime that lasted for four decades and establishing democracy in Portugal once gain. One year later, general elections took place and two years later, the country enacted its new constitution.

The Convento do Carmo ("Carmo Convent") is also located at Largo do Carmo. Its ruins are the most notable evidence of the 1755 earthquake.

Lusideias' recommended next step from here is visiting the upper part of Elevador de Santa Justa ("Santa Justa Lift")!
