Transportation Methods + Tips to Save Money
This travel tip covers the best ways to get around and how to do it on a budget.

The two main transportation methods in Italy are private vehicle or public transport.
Depending on the area of the country you are travelling through, we would recommend either renting a car or taking public transportation.
Tuscany + The Dolomites: Renting a vehicle is highly recommended here. This will allow you to explore these less populated regions at your leisure.
Rome, Venice, Florence, and Cinque Terre: A combination of walking and public transport is the best way to get around these cities and towns.
Getting around in between cities and regions: The high-speed trains are fantastic in Italy! We would recommend travelling via train instead of domestic flights as it tends to be quicker and less expensive.
Tips to save money:
Plan your route ahead of time to save on fuel.
Book your rental car as far in advance as possible (3-6 months is best).
If you feel comfortable driving one, manual vehicles are cheaper to rent.
Parkades are much more expensive than above-ground lots.
Check with your credit card company to see if you are insured. This way, you can forgo the rental company's car insurance.
Book trains in advance for the best price.
Opt to walk instead of taking taxis for distances under 3 kilometres.
