Italy

The two main transportation methods in Italy are private vehicle or public transport.

Depending on the area of the country you are travelling through, we would recommend either renting a car or taking public transportation.

  • Tuscany + The Dolomites: Renting a vehicle is highly recommended here. This will allow you to explore these less populated regions at your leisure.

  • Rome, Venice, Florence, and Cinque Terre: A combination of walking and public transport is the best way to get around these cities and towns.

  • Getting around in between cities and regions: The high-speed trains are fantastic in Italy! We would recommend travelling via train instead of domestic flights as it tends to be quicker and less expensive.

Tips to save money:

  • Plan your route ahead of time to save on fuel.

  • Book your rental car as far in advance as possible (3-6 months is best).

  • If you feel comfortable driving one, manual vehicles are cheaper to rent.

  • Parkades are much more expensive than above-ground lots.

  • Check with your credit card company to see if you are insured. This way, you can forgo the rental company's car insurance.

  • Book trains in advance for the best price.

  • Opt to walk instead of taking taxis for distances under 3 kilometres.
