The Blautopf is a mysterious and unique geological feature located in the city of Blaubeuren, Germany. Known as the Underground Blue Pot, the large spring is 21 meters deep and is the source of the river Blau. Its strange blue hue is due to nanoscale limestone particles dispersed in the water, which causes Rayleigh scattering to shine in the blue spectrum. The nearby hammer mill is powered by water from the spring, allowing visitors to observe its strong pressure firsthand. Legends surround the Blautopf; many tales describe the theft of lead from anyone trying to measure the depth of the spring. It also inspires a popular Swabian dialect tongue twister that is taught to local children. Anyone curious about its captivating beauty can visit and learn more.
