Hengifoss is a majestic waterfall located in eastern Iceland, near the town of Egilsstaðir. It is one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland, with a height of approximately 128 meters. The waterfall is fed by a tributary of the river Lagarfljót, which flows from the nearby lake Hjálpleysa.

What makes Hengifoss particularly striking is its unique appearance. The waterfall cascades down a series of steep cliffs, which are made up of layers of basalt and tuff. These layers form distinct bands of red, brown, and black rock, creating a striking contrast against the white water of the falls. The layers of rock also reveal the geological history of the area, as they were formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago.

The hike to Hengifoss takes around an hour and offers incredible views, but involves a 300-meter elevation gain. Though not too difficult, it is a quit steep hike.
