Know Before You Go!!

If you’re planning a trip to Iceland, here are some helpful things to know before you go.

Weather
Iceland’s weather is unpredictable year-round and can shift quickly, even within the same day. It’s a good idea to check the forecast often—www.vedur.is is the most reliable source.

Clothing
What you pack really matters here. Layers, waterproof gear, and good shoes will make a huge difference. I’ve shared a more detailed packing guide in a different travel tip section.

Language
Although Icelandic is the official language, English is widely spoken, so you won’t have trouble communicating.

Cash & Payments
You’ll hardly need cash during your trip. Cards and mobile payments like Apple Pay and Google Pay are accepted almost everywhere. Just keep in mind that American Express isn’t as commonly accepted.

Currency
The currency used is the Icelandic Króna (ISK). Having a currency converter app on your phone can be really helpful for staying on top of prices. 100 ISK is roughly 80 cents USD.

Water
Tap water is completely safe to drink and comes from natural glacier source it’s some of the cleanest water you’ll find anywhere.

Tipping
Tipping isn’t part of the culture in Iceland, so there’s no expectation to do so. Of course, you can always leave something extra if you feel the service was exceptional.

Electricity
Iceland runs on 220 volts type F and C round pin outlets. If you’re visiting from North America, you’ll need a power adapter.

Wi-Fi & Connectivity
You’ll find strong coverage in Reykjavík and most of the south coast. As you head into more remote areas, service can drop, but Wi-Fi is still widely available. Many rental companies offer portable Wi-Fi as well.
