The Big 5 refers to a group of animals that are the most popular to see on a safari.

The term is derived from an old hunting term as these animals were seen as the most difficult to hunt on foot. Thankfully now the term has a much nicer meaning!

The Big 5 include:

  • The elephant

  • The leopard

  • The African buffalo

  • The lion

  • The rhino

Top tips on how to spot the Big 5:

  1. Manage expectations! It's not always possible to see all the animals in one trip. These animals are wild, so there is no guarantee you will see all of them. we were lucky enough to see all 5 on our trip to Tanzania!

  2. Visit a park that is home to the Big 5! The Ngorongoro Crater is an excellent option as the area is so densely populated with wildlife.

  3. Visit during the dry season! Wildlife is much easier to spot during the dry season as the bush is much thinner and animals gather around watering holes.

  4. Start your game drives early in the morning. Wildlife is most active first thing in the morning and late afternoon when the temperatures are cooler.

  5. Opt for a park that allows off-roading! This means you can drive towards the locations of the wildlife and you aren't relying on the wildlife coming to you!
