Tanzania has a tropical climate consisting of two seasons, the dry season and the wet season. The dry season is Tanzania's winter and the wet season is Tanzania's summer.

The Dry Season

  • The dry season runs from June to October. There is little rain and humidity is low.

  • Temperatures are cooler and more comfortable, ranging from 20°C - 30°C (68°F - 86°F) depending on your altitude! It's usually warm during the day, but it will get cold in the mornings and evenings.

  • This is generally considered the 'best' time to go on safari. The dry season means the bush is thinner, so it's easier to spot wildlife. Due to the lack of rain, animals tend to gather around the watering holes, again making it easier to spot them.

  • There are also less mosquitoes around during the dry season due to the lack of rain

The Wet Season

  • The wet season runs from November to May. Humidity is high and there is a higher chance of mosquitoes during this time.

  • The temperatures are hot, often around 30°C (86°F), but the temperatures will cool off in the mornings and evenings, particularly if at higher altitude.

  • November to December are considered the 'short rains', however these can arrive as early as October. It's more likely you will have scattered thunderstorms during the day rather than it rain all day.

  • January to February tend to have a break in the rainy season, making it a lovely time to visit Tanzania for a safari.

  • March to May are the long rains and are the wettest months.
